Are Waterproof Inks Really Waterproof?

In our shop, we offer handwritten greeting cards in both traditional inks and waterproof inks.

Today I am going to show you how these inks behave in contact with water.

This is our list of traditional and waterproof inks:

You can see we have quite a few colors of each type.

To show you the difference in water-resistance between our traditional inks and our waterproof inks, we’ve prepared a video where we spritz them with water.

A Word About Inks

What we call our traditional inks are commercially available inks we have chosen for their color and fluidity. These are typically water-based solutions. They flow nicely on the nib, and have beautiful colors that last in time. They are not supposed to be waterproof.

What we refer to as our waterproof inks are inks that do not change their color once applied, and do not fade or smudge on contact with water.

Are our waterproof inks really waterproof?

As expected, traditional inks will smudge when in contact with water. This is normal, since they are water-based solutions.

You may have noticed that two of the traditional ink colors, Plum and Blue-Black, didn’t smudge either. This is because they are ferro-gallic inks, and their chemical structure gives the ink staying power. However, ferro-gallic inks can change their color over time, though they will never disappear.

On the other hand, our waterproof options stayed in place and didn’t smudge at all.

Which ink should you pick?

There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Choose the ink that you like the most, and that suits your needs best. Most greeting cards are not generally exposed to water, and neither are framed personal mantras or quotes.

Still, if you’re worried your heartfelt message will make the recipient cry, choose a waterproof ink when ordering your custom greeting card!
